Equipment/systems installed onboard warships are required to operate under stringent marine environmental conditions and besides meeting the functional requirements, must have the additional capability to withstand extreme conditions of vibration, shock, damp heat, corrosive environment, EMI/EMC etc. that they may be subjected to during their operational life cycle onboard ships/submarines. Therefore, as per practice worldwide, equipment/systems installed on warships must be Type Approved and such a requirement should be explicitly incorporated in the Supply Order by the OPA upfront. Type testing involves conducting series of “Qualification Tests (QTs)’ on D & E (Development and Engineering) model or first-off production. The Qualification Tests include Environmental Tests, Ship Motion Tests, EMI/EMC Checks and other Equipment specific tests. The Environmental Tests are used to verify a piece of equipment can withstand the rigors of harsh environments.
